14 Jul 09 Sony E440 series Announced

We here at dapreview have become rather spoiled by the steady stream of touchscreen players coming out lately. It seems like most companies have all but abandoned the once dominant tactile control for a more fingers-on approach. Today, Sony refreshed our memories with their newest Walkman, the E440 series. Like last year’s E340 series, the E440 has a circular D-pad and matching menu buttons. A configuration that many here have coined the “Mickey Mouse” control scheme. The new Walkman is 9.3mm’s thin, and comes in two colors, a solid black one, and a striking two-tone red and black model. Besides the new looks, not much has changed under the hood from previous generations.

Features

  • Capacity: 4, 8, and 16GB
  • Display: 2.0″ LCD (320 x 240)
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, and AAC
  • Video: MPEG-4 SP, WMV, and H.264
  • FM Tuner and recorder
  • Battery life: 30 hours for Audio, 6 hours for video

According to Sony Europe, the players will start shipping later this month. A US release will inevitably follow.

I warn you, this one is a bit long. And rather unorganized.

14 Jul 09 Cowon S9: Ceramic White

Today Cowon Korea have unveiled images of their new “Ceramic White” Cowon S9, that brings to 3 the amount of colour variations you, the consumer, can choose from between this new white one, the original “titanium” one and of course the easily scratch “black chrome” one.

Click the image to see more Ceramic White S9 shots

Apart from this extra colour not much has changed since the last firmware release, but knowing Cowon I think we can expect a few more features to be added by firmware upgrade (bluetooth profiles maybe?) before this white model hits either the US or European (and further) markets.

Cowon S9 Nominated by T3magazine: Music Product of the Year

On a side note, much like AMP3’s joyous nomination it appears that the Cowon S9, Apple iPod Touch and Sony X1000 series have all been nominated for T3’s “Music Product of the Year”, the vote is open to the public from anywhere in the world so get voting for your favourite.

13 Jul 09 Samsung YP-M1 outed by Bluetooth certification?

Samsung appears to have yet another player up their sleeves. A member at ABi reported on a certification report from Bluetooth.org for the “YP-M1″. The only relevant info gathered from the report is that it has a 3.3″ widescreen display, and of course Bluetooth support (2.0 Spec, and A2DP). A few posts down, someone posted a picture of the rumored new player.

So, M1 has a 3.3″ touchscreen, a rounded form-factor and chrome edges. Does that remind you of any other player? Although Samsung already has the P3, it’s clear the M1 is a direct answer to Cowon’s S9. Samsung has been churning out new players a t a record pace this year. From the P3, Q2], R1, CP3, and now the M1. I can barely tell the difference between them! We’ll report on any new info as it becomes available.

10 Jul 09 Samsung YP-R1 Hands-on

It was just a month ago that one of our members spotted the Samsung R1 at a UK retailer. Like the P3, it has a haptic touchscreen display (2.6″), and plays a wide array of codecs, including Ogg, FLAC, H.264, and Divx. It also has support for Bluetooth, and even has a TV-out function. French gadget site, Le Journal du Geek (JDG) got an exclusive hands-on with the player and have provided us curious onlookers with some pictures and first impressions.

The R1 also goes by the name “r’mix”. The remix moniker is no doubt being used because of the included DJ software, which is also found in Samsung’s BeatDJ line of mobile phones . The DJ feature allows you to mix tracks, do scratch affects, and add filters. According to JDG, the R1 can play certain videos back without re-encoding them. And finally, battery life will be approximately 30 hours for audio, and 5 hours for video. The R1, or r’mix sounds like a pretty great DAP. It comes in sizes ranging from 8 to 32GB, and is available to pre-order at various retailers, including Play UK.

07 Jul 09 Creative’s first Touchscreen player leaked

It’s not easy being an editor of a Creative fansite. I see other companies like Cowon and Samsung making sweet touchscreen devices, while Creative puts out things like the…Zen Moo. Perhaps now we have something to get a little excited about. A recent FCC report was leaked, revealing an upcoming touchscreen player called the “Zii”, as well as a developer model called the “Zii Egg”. As many of you know, the Zii is a powerful processing chip that Creative hyped a few months ago.

The mock-ups above look pretty similar to the back of an iPhone, but there’s not much else to go on. So far we know the device will have built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and will be equipped with an HD camera. It’s possible that the Zii/Zii Egg will be running on Android as Creative showed off a tech demo of the Zii chip playing HD video on Android at the Mobile World Congress back in February. It’s nice to see Creative finally catching up, but I just wonder if it’s too late. The Zii Touch will have to be amazing to compete with other upcoming players like the Zune HD. If the past is any indication, we may see this player announced some time in August.

07 Jul 09 A little favour for our Friends at AMP3.co.uk

Back when we started up in 2004, yes, way back then, we had an absolutely brilliant crew member who wen by the name of Robert Sinke, in his wisdom he teamed up with a smallish online store in the UK called AMP3.co.uk, luckily for us AMP3 grew to be a rather large online store and with the revenue Robert managed to generate from AMP3 offers and such DAPreview was able to improve and improve over the years.

Sadly Robert is no longer part of the DAPreview team, and with his absence our links with AMP3 had somewhat died down, however whenever we hear good news about our friends in Scotland we do like to pass it on because at the end of the day without them we might not be here. So when we got wind that they had been nominated for Retailer of the Year by UK magazine “T3″ we were absolutely delighted. It’s a great achievement for them, especially given that we know just how hard they’ve worked over the last two years to really improve their customer service and stock range. So if you’ve got a spare couple of seconds click the link and vote for them (or if you feel one of the other nominees deserve it more vote for them)
