23 Mar 09 The iriver P7 and P35 - get your wallets ready.

The iriver P7 and P35 are both now on sale in Korea, and here is a quick overview of both devices. Please feel free to ask for further info in the comments.

iriver P35

The iriver P35 is available in 3 versions: P35 basic (8GB), P35 DMB (16GB), and P35 Wi-Fi (16GB). The Wi-Fi version is the one most people will go for and runs for about $285 USD. The P35 supports full browsing, open API widgets, and transfer of files through FTP server support. Like most recent devices, the P35 has a built in accelerometer, large touch display (4.3″ WQVGA) and also features the famous SPINN wheel. Other features include an FM radio, MS Office viewer, scheduler, address book, flash player and a mintpass inspired memo feature. Surprisingly, iriver opted for QBS instead of SRS WOW this time around. Overall, the P35 is quite a nice package with a brilliant design, although the 16GB leaves more to be wanted.

SPECS:
Capacity: 8/16GB w/ microSD/SDHC (up to 16GB)
Size: 128.3 x 79.7 x 17.8mm @220g
Battery Life: 16hr audio / 8hr video / 7hr dmb

iriver P7

The iriver P7 is clearly a super simple PMP, although the P35 seems pretty simple already - by today’s standards. The larger 16GB version is sold at $170 USD in Korea. As most of the people already know, the P7 has a unique “magazine” like UI which clearly states the target audience of this device. The P7 also comes in a very nicely designed reusable package (visit the product page for more info). Overall, the P7 is very O2 like and sadly doesn’t feature anything special. The device is absolutely gorgeous though, and predictably won both the iF and Red Dot Design awards. iriver is also offering a limited edition Lady Gaga P7 which comes with two singles and one album preloaded into the device.

SPECS:
Capacity: 8/16GB w/ microSD/SDHC (up to 16GB)
Size: 112.3 x 73.4 x 13.2mm @175.2g
Battery Life: 35hr audio / 7hr video
Display: 4.3″ WQVGA @ 260K colors
Audio: MP3 / WMA / WAV / OGG / FLAC
Video: MPEG1/2/4 / Xvid / WMV7/8 / WMV9 / RM/RMVB / H.264 Baseline
US Release: Pre-order @ J and R

23 Mar 09 This iPod speaker dock is full of Craps

iPod owners are so lucky to get so many cool accessories. Just check out this cute little speaker dock shaped like a die. The connector on the top is compatible with nearly every iPod, including the touch and mini. It even has dedicated volume buttons that are cleverly disguised as numbers on the face of the die. If you’re in Japan, you can roll over to your favorite tech store on April 4th, and pick one up for 2,814 Yen, or about $29US.

I guess one could say these dice are loaded…with speakers. I’m so terrible.

22 Mar 09 Samsung YP-CP3 leaked

While many of us are still waiting for the P3 to arrive on our shores, Samsung is wasting no time in releasing another touchscreen PMP. The YP-CP3 was recently revealed by P2club.net, a Russian Samsung fansite. The CP3 actually has a few advantages over Samsung’s flagship P3. It has a full set of tactile controls, including a retro joystick controller. It also has a microSD expansion slot.

As this is a leak, we don’t have the full spec list yet. So far we know it has a 3.0″ touchscreen (400 x 240 resolution), support for MP3, WMA, Ogg, FLAC, MPEG-4, WMV and RM/RMVB. It also has the usual set of extras including an FM tuner, Voice recorder, and Text support. Additionally there’s a rumor going around that it has a camera on the back. I’m a bit skeptical of that since a “Camera” option isn’t shown in the main menu.

My initial impressions about the CP3 are mixed. And not just because it shares the same nickname as an NBA superstar. I just wonder if it’s a good idea for Samsung to release another touchscreen PMP so quickly. Ironically, the CP3 looks more like a touchscreen version of the Q1/Q2 series, a line of players originally made as a tactile version of the P2 series. Feeling confused yet? We’ll try and sort this out, once we obtain more information.

20 Mar 09 iriver P7 shows up for pre-order at J and R

The clock continues to tick down at iriver’s site for the release of the P35, and P7. That’s for the Korean launch of course, but what about the rest of the world? While doing my usual e-window shopping at J and R Electronics, I stumbled upon the pre-order page for the P7. They have the 8 and 16GB models on their site, priced at $169.99 and $199.99 respectively.

Features:

  • Capacity: 8 or 16GB with microSD expansion
  • Display: 4.3″ Touchscreen (480 x 272 resolution, 260K colors)
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, OGG, ASF, FLAC, APE, WAV, AC-3 and AAC
  • Video: MPEG, DivX, RM, RMVB and H.264
  • Built-in Speaker, SRS WOW, and 7 EQ Settings
  • Extras: FM Tuner/Recorder
  • Battery life: 35 hours for Audio, 7 hours for video
  • Dimensions: 73.4 X 112.3 X 13.6mm

On paper, the P7 isn’t too different from the Cowon O2 and others. The interface is where iriver intends to separate itself from the crowd. Here’s how Cnet described it at CES 2009:
“The big eye-catcher is the main menu, which rather than using text or icons, lays out your options magazine-style, with a snapshot of the last item played leading into the various media submenus.” It’s nice to see a company trying something different. Make sure to check back here for more coverage of the iriver P7 and others.

20 Mar 09 Warm deal: Sony A729 (16GB) for $219.99 Shipped

Sony’s players are generally more expensive than the competition, so when a deal comes around it usually just brings it down to a normal price range. Sony Style provided me with a coupon code (WALKMAN80) to save 25% off their A729 (16GB) Walkman. That brings our 2008 DAP of the Year down to $219.99 shipped (taxes in some states). That’s still a little pricey for a 16GB player, but you probably won’t find it cheaper from any other retailer.

Features
:

  • Capacity: 16GB
  • Display: 2.4″ TFT (320 x 240)
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV
  • Video: M4V, MPEG-4
  • EX-series headphones included
  • Battery life: 36 hours of audio, 9 hours for video
  • Dimensions: 51.0 x 93.9 x 9.3mm

19 Mar 09 DAPreview welcomes DaHarder to the staff + DAP Shop opened

When I became a staff member at DAP Review back in 2006, there were 7 other members contributing news, reviews, and articles. Eventually they all went their separate ways, and I was left to hold down the fort. Now that I actually own the site, I want to bring us back to the good old days, when we’d churn out quality reviews in a timely manner. I can’t do it all myself, so I’ve recruited members such as Dominic, Design Fabulous, and last month BBD to help me out. Today I’m announcing our newest member. If you’ve been here long enough, there’s no doubt you’ll gain a sense of respect, and a healthy dose of envy for him. I’m talking about DaHarder, or Dav, a long-time member who has amassed a collection of over 200 DAP’s (well he’s stopped counting).

Dav will no doubt add valuable content to our site, including featured reviews, and articles about the DAP industry. He’s also known for the wonderful paint jobs he puts on his players, so we’ll show some of those off on the main page as well. He’s already hard at work, writing up his review for the iPod Shuffle 3g. I can’t wait to see it, and the rest of his work. So on behalf of DAPreview, I just want to welcome DaHarder to the staff!

DAP Shop Now Open

I’d also like to announce the grand opening of our official “DAP Shop“. You can find it at the top where the rest of our Site Links are. Essentially, it’s an Amazon store that highlights categories specific to this site. So you’ll see main sections for MP3 Players, Headphones, and MP3 albums. There’s also a few categories for books, movies, games and other electronics. The Shop is completely secure, since it’s being powered by Amazon. By using our DAP Shop, it will help with the costs for our servers and general management. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

I also want to use opportunity to express my appreciation to all the contributing members of this site, and for those readers who haven’t signed up yet (what are you waiting for!). Our goals won’t be realized without your ongoing support!

18 Mar 09 iriver begins countdown for P35 and P7 release

Checking out iriver Korea’s site this morning, I was greeted with a flash teaser for the P35 and P7. The presentation was accompanied by a countdown, which looks to end on Monday, March 23rd.

The P35 is an all-in-one PMP that uses the same controls as the iriver Spinn. It has a 4.3″ touchscreen (480 x 272), 16 or 32GB capacities (plus microSD expansion), integrated Wi-Fi for browsing the web, and a built-in accelerometer. It’ll play back most popular audio/video formats, and has TV-out. There’s a bunch of extras as well, including an office viewer, a whiteboard, flash games, and DMB (for Korea). Shutterbugs will also be pleased with the USB-OTG connection, and support for RAW formatted photos.
The P7 isn’t as beefed up as the P35. It’s more in line with players like the Cowon O2. It has a 4.3″ touchscreen, capacities ranging from 4 to 32GB (plus microSD expansion) and the same format support as the P35. It has a pretty unique UI that’s designed to look like a magazine layout. We should have more info to report when the countdown hits zero.
