Everyone loves a good unboxing video right? Well, courtesy of our friends at Portable Alliance, you’re getting front row seats to the opening of the iriver P35. Watch with awe as the contents break free of their cardboard confinement and find a new home in the US, after a grueling trip from Korea:
The P35 comes nicely packaged in a clear plastic case. That’s no ordinary case either. Iriver designed the packaging of the P35 and P7 with the intent of being reused. It’s a storage container, a frame, it’s anything you want it to be! So far, iriver has no plans to sell the P35 worldwide, but we’ll keep you posted if that changes.
Thanks Jeff

One of the best players to come out of CES this year was the W-series from Sony. The W-Series eliminated the need for wires by incorporating the player into a pair of wraparound EX-series Headphones. The wearable DAP is perfect for those with active lifestyles, or people like me who always get their headphones tangled up beyond all recognition, or TUBAR (trademark pending). The W-series has a nice modern design, and comes bundled with a cool docking station as seen below:
Features:
- Capacity: 2GB
- Audio: MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV
- 13.5mm EX-series earphones
- Battery life: 13 hours (Plus 3 minute quick charges support for 90 minutes of playback)
- UMS/MSC
- ZAPPIN™ technology for quick song searches: Listen to the first few seconds of the chorus to find your favourite tracks
- Comes with holder and Charging stand
- Colors: Black or Pink
Sony has just started shipping these out in the US at a price of $69.99. We might pick one up to review if there’s enough interest for it. Let us know!

In the past week, iriver has released the P7, P35 and E150, which is a lot of devices in a really short time. Today, iriver released the newest Dicple (iriver’s lineup of e-dictionaries), the D50N. The D50N is very special because of the “N” at the end of the name. As you may have guessed, the N stands for network, meaning Wi-Fi support. There is much to like about this new device. First of all, it supports pretty much all the functions of the P35 but adds a keyboard, which is great for internet surfing. The device has 16GB of memory, a 4.8″ touch LCD (800X480) and a very attractive external display (+ touch buttons) for music playback.

All in all, I’d say that the D50N is like a premium version of the P35. The fact that the D50N has a superior display and keyboard makes it a better PMP/MID than the P35. The D30N is the most expensive of recent iriver devices at around $370USD.

Most of us won’t have a chance to play with the iriver P35 in person, so the best we can do is live vicariously through Korean videos of the player. Like the one below, which features cheesy music, and sped-up action that makes the GUI look faster than it really is. The P35 looks like it shares some of the same “magazine-style” elements as the P7. It also has a widget menu that you can customize with various apps.
The Spinn controls were a nice touch, and should come in handy while browsing long web pages. Another nice addition is the built-in accelerometer. That’s something I’d like to see on more PMP’s. We’re still waiting for a full review of the P35, but this should whet your appetite until then. Make sure to check out our 2009 SSD PMP comparison chart to see how the P35 sizes up to the competition.

Thanks to some documents by the FCC, it looks like the Sony X1000 is also coming in red. The report provides a label ID for a Black model, and a Red one:
This is nothing new for Sony of course. Sony has put out a red model for just about every DAP they’ve made. Now the only question is whether it’ll get the same Granite treatment as the black model, or something different (maybe marble!). Either way, it’s bound to look sexy.
Official X1000 Video Demo
Sony has also created a demonstration video of the X1000. Among other things, it highlights the player’s multitude of audio enhancements (S-master amplifier, digital noise cancellation, etc..), slick interface, and how it syncs with computers. The X1000 appears to be a UMS device, or “open format” as the video describes it. A little transfer window shows up on your computer, allowing you to drag and drop files onto the player from any folder, or program, including iTunes.

As many people here know already, mintpass is a company that was created by iriver’s former CEO Yang, Duk-Jun. He was disappointed with the progress of iriver; although it’s one of the biggest Korean DAP companies; so decided to start a new company based on networking. The mintpass mintpad has been available in Korea for nearly half a year now but will be invading international markets in a few months time. I’m feeling alot of deja vu, since iriver started selling internationally in the same way. The pricing for the mintpad will be around $150 so is a pretty nice deal for a device that’s quite capable. I’ve actually had about a week of play time with the device, so I’m pretty confident with this device - and therefore organized the key features here in anticipation of the release.

I just got information that iriver has released a successor of the E100 - the E150 in Korea. The E100 and E100S2 were both unbelievably popular in Korea. The key reasons are the low price tag and attractive design. The E150 follows this trend with a $78USD price for the 4GB and $100USD for 8GB. The design is very “iriver” in language with soft lines and a “dish” like curved edge to the front surface. The buttons are now integrated into the body and the speaker grills have been made more attractive too.
iriver has also upgraded the UI with a more playful and colorful design. Other than these cosmetic changes, the iriver E150 is nearly identical to the E100. I feel that the E150 is the prefect upgrade for the recession though. It doesn’t cost a lot to make small upgrades like this and I’m guessing that it’s what the consumers want at a times like these. I feel that iriver will have no problem selling over a million units like they did with the E100.
