The iriver P7 was probably the most anticipated device at iriver's CES booth. The P7 is very much like the Cowon O2. The UI is designed to look like a magazine layout, making it quite unique. This UI is displayed on a 4.3" touch display at a somewhat disappointing 480 x 272px. In terms of memory, the P7 comes in 4/8/16/32GB with a micro SD slot. The device is completely crafted in aluminum - continuing the new iriver design language.

I was checking out
PMP Today this morning, and I noticed they covered a cool new player from Myracer, called the lisse T10. This is the same company behind the unique
lisse S10. After following a trail of links, l found the story led back to a Korean forum thread where someone just posted a teaser picture of the PMP, and nothing more. I was going to write a similar preview, but I decided to do a little more digging. I noticed the address for the lisse s10 was "s10.myracer.co.kr". So maybe putting T10 there instead would work too? Indeed it did.
The lisse T10 is eerily similar to the iriver Spinn. One of the few differences is a curved appendage, which seems added just to make the rip look less blatant. Either way, I think it looks fantastic. The t10 seems to use the same Spinn control system, and even has similar specs too:
Features:
- Capacity: 2 and 4GB
- Display: 2.8" touchscreen (320 x 240)
- Audio: MP3, WMA, FLAC, APE, AAC, and WAV
- Video: Xvid, Divx, WMV, AVI, and RM
- Built-in speaker (that appendage thingy)
- FM tuner and recorder
- Extra: Text reader, Games support
- Dimensions: 46 x 40 x 11mm
Like the lisse s10, the device was designed by
dadam, the same company that designs Cowon players and many others. Perhaps they made the Spinn as well? So which do you like better, the T10 or the Spinn? It's not often I say this, but I think the copycat wins hands down this time.

Teclast has just announced their latest PMP called the M50HD. The Press release talked more about the design of the player, rather than its features. Teclast claims the M50HD is made with a military-grade Zinc-Magnesium alloy, capable of withstanding higher temperatures and pressure. Even the screen is toughened up with a "super tempered" Polysilicon glass panel.
The M50HD has a funky retro interface from the looks of it. As the HD suffix suggests, it supports 720P high definition video. That's kind of useless since it's 4.3" screen maxes out at a 800 x 480 resolution. Thankfully there is TV-out support. It supports the same formats as other MP4 players nowadays, including FLAC, RM, Xvid and Divx. We all want our gadgets to be tough, but this seems like overkill. Perhaps they're building these for their national army or something.

We've been seeing many different iterations of the iriver "UNIT" in the past few years. Well, iriver has finally made it into an actual product and it's now called the WAVE HOME. The device is going to be released as in parter with Korea Telecomm and is basically an IP phone. The device has two parts, a base station and a portable handset that docks into the device. The WAVE HOME is meant to be used for video conferencing, and to retrieve information like weather, traffic and news. There is also a note function that allows you to leave notes for your family members. There is one big disappointment though - the device does not separate into two parts to be used as a PMP like in the concepts. The device has not yet be released, and the only information released by iriver is on their international website (odd). I'm guessing that it will be released in Korea in the next few weeks, and we'll have more information then.

I just received word that the
Meizu M8 goes on sale today. I haven't kept up with the latest news on this long overdue phone, but I could have sworn Meizu was already selling it. After a little brushing up, it turns out they were selling a beta version which has a fair amount of problems to be ironed out. Ironically, the test version has WiFi enabled, while the Official release does not.

Since its debut the Zune has become the butt of so many jokes in the media. Now Family Guy has jumped on the bandwagon with this clip:
Most of us know the Zune isn't as bad as the media portrays it to be, Maybe people can't take the player seriously because of its name? I laughed so hard the first time I found out they were calling it the "Zune", and I still think it's a bad name today. What do you think DAPreviewers? What would you call the Zune if you worked at Microsoft?
This might be the first time a company actually wants you to
scratch their touchscreen device. The BeatDJ (or M7600) from Samsung features a UI inspired by a turntable and DJ software that allows you to mix and add effects to your tracks on the go. There's also a built-in amplifier from Bang and Olufsen. The BeatDJ has a curved design reminiscent of Helio Ocean and others.
BeatDJ Features:
- 2.8" WQVGA AMOLED screen (240 x 480 resolution, 16M colors)
- Capacity: 50MB internal memory and microSDHC expansion
- Audio: MP3, WMA, AAC
- Bang and Olufsen amplifier, SRS 5.1 surround sound
- Video: H.264, DivX and XviD
- FM tuner with RDS
- 3MP camera
- Bluetooth A2DP
- GPS navigation
- Quadband GSM/HSDPA data
- 960 mAh battery
- Dimensions: 112 x 51 x 13.9 millimeters
The BeatDisc (or Samsung M7610) shares most of the same specs as the BeatDJ but has a 2.6" screen, and a built-in numeric keypad. I'm not smitten with the BeatDJ's design, but it looks like it'd be a fun phone to use. No word on pricing or release schedule yet.

If you're paranoid about your precious little player getting scratched then you need to get a BSE....A what? It's a skin from a company called "Best Skins Ever". The skins are made from the exact same materials of the more popular Invisble Shield from Zagg. Plus BSE's sell for a fraction of the price that Invisible Shields are going for. Now you can knock another 20% off your order with a coupon code (listed below).
They have pre-made skins for many DAP's, phones, and even laptops. There's also a custom skin option if you can't find your player. I sound like one of those paid infomercial guys don't I? No, I'm plugging them because I have them on some of my players and I think they're great.

Normally I wouldn't let something like this touch these pages but it's Valentine's Day or in my case "Anything Pink and Girly Amnesty day". Besides iPods, those Chinese MP4 websites absolutely love to clone the
iriver Mplayer. It's simple really - anything Mickey Mouse is bound to sell well, and it's not like the player's design is that hard to replicate. Now they've taken it a step farther and have created a cellphone in the shape of the iconic rodent.
Looks pretty ridiculous to me, but I can already hear schoolgirls around the world saying "awwww." It has a 1.3" screen, a 1.3MP camera, 1GB of internal memory, MP3 playback, Bluetooth and runs on a GSM network. Looking at the size of those buttons, I can't help but think this phone was actually made for a mouse.

When you think of the word Zune you probably associate it with Microsoft's line of MP3 players. The new head of the Zune division, Enrique Rodriguez wants you to think otherwise. He wants to make Zune a service rather than a singular device. Rodriguez, who also heads up the Media Center TV sector, says "Zune the service needs to transcend Zune the device." The Zune hardware team has also been combined with the mobile device team which leads me to believe we'll see Zune software on all future Windows Mobile platforms. Here's a quick summary of the new mission provided by
Zune Insider- We are combining the Zune software team with the Connected TV organization (Windows Media Center, Mediaroom) to create a single group focused on creating software and services that enable great entertainment experiences across the PC, TV, mobile phones and Zune devices.
- The Zune device hardware team joined the mobile communications business group to create a center of excellence in portable hardware. This will bring people who live and breathe hardware together.
- The priority now is to focus on delivering against our current product roadmaps across each team in the new organization. That means new software, services and devices for Zune customers
I personally think this is a great move, and an obvious one for Microsoft to make. As it is, the Zune simply can't compete with iPods. Microsoft's greatest strength is their software so expanding the Zune into a service that might show up on Smartphones would make good business sense. Microsoft still intends to make new Zune DAP's of course, it just looks like they'll be greater focus on Media Center and Mobile applications now.
I'm pretty optimistic about this new mission, but I want to know what you think. Is this the right direction for Microsoft to take?
